Phil Hellmuth and Beat the Poker Brat WSOP Video Game

Friday, October 5th, 2007
  • WSOP Video Game

Phil HelmuthWorld Series of Poker2008: Battle for the Bracelets new Video Game is using Phil Hellmuth as it spokesperson for it initial advertisements that have been airing on Television this week. Phil challenges you to ’Beat the Poker Brat’ on WSOP 2008: Battle for the Bracelets.  You can go to Beat the Brat to get a sample of what the game is like and play a Hold ‘Em tournament against Phil and Johnny Chan, Chris Ferguson and Mike Matusow.

Your ‘Dead Money’ blogger tried the site and found some things good and others not so good. The graphics are pretty good and the avatars look just like the Poker Pros. There were some things that hopefully the developers don’t really have in the actual video game and are only part of the ’sample’ website. For example the betting actions on the sample are very rudimentary. No check button so if you want to check you hit the call button. To bet you have to click bet and then click on chip values to accumulate an amount to bet. You can’t just make a pot bet, you have to click on chips until you reach the amount you want. If everyone bets and raises around to you then you have to look above the other player avatars to see how much they bet to know how much it will cost you to call. If you are first to act and your holding is not worth betting and you just want to check you hit the call button. If you are the big blind and there have been no raises to you and you want to check your option you hit the call button.

I made an assumption that I would see some of Phil’s tableside manner that I have posted about a few times, but I was mistaken. Only music from the website. Again I am thinking this is just from the ’sample’ website and the actual video game is much better. I was actually disappointed that neither Helmuth or Matusow had anything to say about what an idiot player I was. I did knock them both out though and got Heads up with Johnny Chan. I couldn’t beat Johnny and finished 2nd.

Your ‘Dead Money’ blogger Michael DSC00004_1.JPGand how he looked when he knocked out Phil Hellmuth in the video game Beat the Brat challenge. I thought he would hit me with a bunch of his usual lines about how I couldn’t play poker and didn’t I know who he was and all that, but nothing. He just left the table.

WSOP Europe Video Interview with Main Event Bracelet Winner Annette Obrestad

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007
  • WSOP Europe Video Interview with Main Event Champion Annette Obrestad

PokerTube has this short video, of an interview by PokerNews of WSOPE Main Event Champion Annette Obrestad, available. Annette talks about how for a while she was card dead and the time she got either Aces or Kings she only won the blinds. She went on to say that she won when she would hit the flop with her mediocre hands. She indicated that she likes playing in Live tournaments now and will be playing a lot more Live tournaments. Annette was a little disappointed that she won’t be able to play in the United States for a little more than 2 years. Annette has no plans yet for what to do with the over $2,000,000 US dollars she won. Finally she said the best thing was winning the WSOPE Main Event Bracelet.

Moneymaker, Raymer and Hachem - How they became Champions

Monday, September 3rd, 2007
  • Moneymaker, Raymer and Hachem - How they became Champions

PokerStars spokespersons Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem got together and made brief videos discussing how they became WSOP Main Event Champions. The videos are provided by PokerTube. No big secrets are given away during the videos but they are interesting. Over the years you probably have heard that Moneymaker won his seat to the WSOP Main Event through an online satellite, but did you know that he was disappointed when he found out that he won a seat instead of the $10,000 in cash? Raymer lets the viewer know that he briefly thought he was beaten on the hand that won the Main Event for him. Hachem discusses flopping a straight and trapping Dannenmann to win the title.

Joe Hachem

  • Your ‘Dead Money’ blogger Michael DSC00004_1.JPG will be studying these videos with an eye towards figuring out how to win the WSOP Main Event next year or at least a Sit and Go.

Poker after Dark with Phil Hellmuth from YouTube

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
  • YouTube of Poker after Dark with Phil Hellmuth

Here is a 3 part video of an appearance Phil Hellmuth made on NBC’s Poker after Dark. Phil has lots of issues with his table mates. The video is found on YouTube. I have put links below for all 3 parts.

Phil Hellmuth Blows Up On Poker After Dark Part 1 of 3

Phil Hellmuth Blows Up On Poker After Dark Part 2 of 3

Phil Hellmuth Blows Up On Poker After Dark Part 3 of 3

The video captures typical Phil Hellmuth table behavior. Complaining about his tablemates. He even goes so far as to inform NBC that he will not be back for any Poker after Dark tournaments. I always find these ‘Acts’ by Phil to be very entertaining and humorous. It took me a pic_youtubelogo_123x63.gif long time to come to the conclusion that his table-side manner is all an act. One of the opponents even says Phil is just doing it for more TV time. Phil is not the worst at the table but he is in the top 10. Just as he is in the top 10 Hold ‘Em players worldwide.

Guide to Bluffs and Tells

Friday, August 24th, 2007
  • PokerStars Guide to Bluffs and Tells

Here is a PokerTubevideo with PokerStars spokesmen Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem. The video in 7 minutes tries to give the basic information about Bluffs and Tells. All 3 have make good points. Raymer discusses how the Bluff has to tell a story that is believable. For example you can’t begin a hand like you have Pocket Aces and when 3 suited cards come on the board all of a sudden bet like you hit a flush. Of course we have all played against somebody that tries to pull that off. Raymer goes on to talk about observing how players bet when they have a hand or when they are bluffing. Hachem talks about since he won the Main Event he isn’t able to bluff much anymore because he always gets called. Moneymaker and Raymer agree that they are no longer able to bluff much.

  • Your ‘Dead Money’ blogger Michael doesn’t bluff because he always gives away his bluffs as he gives away all his chips. DSC00004_1.JPG

Make the wrong Play payoff - Kido Pham

Sunday, August 19th, 2007
  • YouTube video of 2 bad plays that work out

All poker players want to get their money in the middle with the best hand. Here is a YouTube video of 2 hands played by Kido Pham and he doesn’t have his money in with the best. Norman Chad even questions during the video how such bad play gets rewarded. One of Pham’s opponents is very upset that Kido called with a 6 high saying it was a lack of respect. Your ‘Dead Money’ blogger does not recommend playing this way, but we all have played with somebody that uses this type of strategy. Pot odds don’t support a call of an All-In during the 1st clip with Kido chasing a small flush. In the 2nd when Joe Hachem re-raises after not playing many hands and then Kido pushes All-In with J-10 offsuit. Brutal plays but they both work out for Kido. Take a look here ====> Kido Pham makes a play

  • History of Poker Video

Pokertube.gif
Click the logo to go to PokerTube home page and you can find a History Channel production of the History of Poker. PokerTube has a 6 part video on its site. Links at the bottom of this post for all 6 installments without stopping at PokerTube first. The video was made in 2003 and many of the current big names of Poker are featured throughout the History of Poker video.

The ‘Dead Money’ blogger watched it and found it very interesting. The video starts with the daily ‘Big Game’ being played in Las Vegas with narration. All the players at the table are recognizable to anybody that watches any Televised Poker today.

I don’t want to give away the History of Poker but here are some of the high lights.

  • Poker Introduced by the French with a 20 card deck in New Orleans in 1800’s
  • Riverboats up and down the Mississippi spawned the ‘Riverboat Dandies’
  • Civil War introduced new Poker games
  • Wild West Poker with Wild Bill Hickock
  • Poker Players always looking for ‘Producers’, today they would look for ‘Dead Money’
  • Changing Gambling Laws in the U.S.
  • Poker in the White House, FDR, Truman and Nixon before he started politics
  • Texas Rounders
    • Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim, Sailor Roberts, Crandall Addington, Johnny Moss and from Tennessee Puggy Pearson
  • Migration to Reno and Vegas after Texas dried up
  • Benny Binion and the Horseshoe Casino
  • Johnny Moss and Nick the Greek’s 5 Month Poker game and Nick’s famous line ‘Mr. Moss I am afraid I will have to let you go’
  • WSOP beginnings in 1970 and the growth provided by Jack Binion’s invention of Satellites

The 6th installment ends just starting to discuss the infusion of Women into Poker, so I suspect that more installments will come on PokerTube.

WSOP 2007 Main Event Videos

  • WSOP 2007 Main Event Videos

Back on my 1st post on Just Poker Talk I recommended a site Pokertube.gif

that has Poker Videos. Sort of like a YouTube for Poker lovers.

The site currently is providing 7 videos from the WSOP 2007 Main Event Pay per view that ESPN produced.

I found the videos very intersting. Phil Gordon gives insight throughout.

Just click on the PokerTube logo above to check them out if you don’t want to wait for the ESPN edited versions.

You still have a chance to vote on how you play Pocket Aces by going to this previous Just Poker Talk post and select the way you play Rockets.

WSOP YouTube Video interview with Freddy Deeb WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Champion

Saturday, June 30th, 2007
  • Click the YouTube Image below to watch the Freddy Deeb interview after he won the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.

The video is less than 2 minutes long. Freddy talks about how hard it was to play 5 straight days 12 hours a day. In fact he says that the 148 player field was real tough but the long days were the real problem trying to win the H.O.R.S.E. tournament. Day 5’s final table was a marathon session of 15 hours before Freddy won the Gold Bracelet. It is very evident in the video how exhausted he was from the effort.

About Just Poker Talk

There’s a lot to learn about poker, much more than the game itself. The last few years are a perfect example of poker’s growth into mainstream American culture - books, movies, video games, television, poker players as celebrities, etc. Along with poker strategy and theory, Just Poker Talk plans to chronicle these happenings because it says something about society, about the state of the world, and, more than anything, we want to know what it all means.
